Well it is Monday March 22nd, and the RQQ ladies have been busy with shows, and online sales, etc. It is hard to keep up with everything that is going on.

Most of our group has joined the ever so popular Facebook, we formed a group there, you can find us under "Rag Queen Quilters etc". Alot of the RQQ ladies have designed their own seperate pages as well, check those out, to keep up with everything they are doing.

Summer is almost here, and I know that everyone is excited to see the snow, and cold weather dissapear.

So glad that it's the new year, and RQQ is about to celebrate 3 years of being a group. January 3rd is the big day!!!!

There has been several of our members sewing up simple quilts to send to Haiti, we know its not cold, but its nice to lay on or cuddle up in a nice clean quilt. Kudos to those of you who can do that. I also wanted to mention that I heard the woman over there sit all day with nothing to do...and would love some pretty fabrics, needles, thread etc, so they can do some sewing of their own.

You can call your local church and see if they have an address to send supplies to, im sure the woman over there would love it!!!!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful new year, and we hope to be posting more here, everyone is just so busy and so much going on, that its hard to sit still and write a line or two.

Stay happy and may your new year be blessed in so many ways.

Just wanted to let everyone know, Rag Queen Quilters are busy doing some promoting, and working on some projects. We are still here, just everyone is busy, and I assure you things will slow down and we will be posting soon.

For those of us that get snow, it will be flying soon, and the warm summers days are almost over, nights will be getting alot cooler, make sure your pets have a warm place to sleep and are protected.

Were gonna try a little fun !!!

First of all I hope you all had a wonderful, and fun 4th of July celebration. For an after the 4th little bit of fun, I thought we could have a photo contest. Did you capture a cute, interesting, or fantastic photo on the 4th? Well we wanna see it...It could be a cute picture of a child enjoying the day, a funny picture of something that happened, or a wonderful picture of the fireworks, whatever you want to enter into the contest.

The contest is only for NON Rag Queen Quilters members, its for our readers. The deadline to get your photo in is July 10th @ midnight. I will submit all your photos to our group of 40 members and they will vote for their favorite picture. The winner will be announced on July 15th right here on our blog. The prize is 2 fat quarters of a pretty olive green fabric with metallic gold swirls on it.

With the impending holiday I wanted to take a moment and reflect.

We live in the greatest country in the world. It may not look like it at times and we forget what we have here.

We have freedoms that lots of countries only dream of. We are truly the land of the free. We have the freedom of speech and religion. We have rights and we can stand up to the government without fear of being imprisoned. We can stand on the street corner and proclaim our messages. Or we can write them in here.

We are still the land of opportunity. We are limited only by ourselves. We must look for those opportunities and not expect them to be handed to us. This country was built by the blood, sweat and tears of our forefathers. They came to this country from across the world. No one handed them a free lunch and if they did not speak English they quickly learned. They brought their traditions and religions along with them. Thus giving us our diverse society.

And most importantly we are the home of the brave. Lets not forget on this holiday as we dine, party and shoot of fireworks that there are men and women around the world defending our freedoms. Just as it has been for over 200 years they stand fast and true. They are willing to give their lives so that we can enjoy ours. So fly that flag proudly.

Happy Independence Day to one and all in the good ole' US of A.

Today's topic on what about Wednesday is about a few organizations that most of us are familiar with but perhaps you haven't visited their websites. So here are some that you should really take a look at and see if perhaps you can make a difference in a child's life.

The first one is http://www.wish.org/ . This wonderful program makes a dream come true for a terminally ill child. Make sure to click on the local events box and see what is going on in your area.

I love the idea that no child is turned away.

Another one that offers help at no charge is the Shriner's Hospitals http://www.shrinershq.org/Hospitals/Main/ . This great organization helped out my nephew who was born with a huge birth mark that covered the entire right side of his face.

The last one I will list today is one that was a great help to me 30 years ago. I had a premie and they took care of the balance of the hospital bills that our insurance did not pay. It is March of Dimes http://www.marchofdimes.com/ .

There are many more wonderful organizations and these are just a few.

Another way to get involved and help out is to watch for local deserving organizations that are having a benefit. If they are having a silent auction donate an item. Our local women's shelter has a benefit dinner every year and they almost always have a silent auction. You get to help out by donating a quilt or tote or whatever items you make with the added benefit of getting your name or company name out there. What better publicity than to be known as a giver.

BUDGET FRIENDLY BLOGS

Saving money is always a great idea, even when the economy is in better shape. No matter what the government says, money is finite and should be spent wisely. Today I thought I’d introduce you to a few blogs I’ve found that help you indulge in your favorite craft without blowing your budget.

Selvage Blog is one I found while researching selvage quilting. Karen Griska is a self-proclaimed passionate quilter who lives in White Plains, NY. She has published a book, “Quilts From the Selvage Edge” which is available on Amazon.com. The thing I love about her blog is that she features items that people have made using selvages. They range from the usual quilts to dresses, lampshades, aprons and lanyards to name just a few. The blog has certainly nudged my creativity out of the safe and usual. You can also visit Karen at www.selvagequilts.com for additional inspiration.

The Scrappy Quilter, Kris Bizzarri, has an entertaining blog that features a lot of her creations and items available in her two stores, “The Scrappy Quilter” on eBay and “Bon Bons and More” on Etsy. Kris also has some great games with wonderful prizes from her store. She is currently in week two of her Treasure Hunt game.

Quilting on a Budget is another blog with a treasure trove of advice, patterns, tips and more. There are also great giveaways. This blog has links to free patterns, book reviews, shopping tips and super tutorials.

The Fabric Shopper is “dedicated to online fabric sources and inspiration.” The latest entry talks about how fabric bundles and sets help you match up fabrics across different lines. The shop has already done the work of mixing and matching for you. I know how inspirational these sets have been for me in the past. Anyway, this blog is great for seeing the latest in new fabrics and for participating in some super giveaways.

I am going to break away from the posts about children but it about family.

In the last two months I lost an uncle and an aunt. There were 10 children and now there are only 4. My dad is the last of the boys and is the youngest boy. It has hit him especially hard since he realizes that time is going by so quickly. It has made me put a lot of things in perspective also.

How much time do we spend running around in our daily lives, to work, running after kids and grandkids, just taking care of life in general and not stopping to be thankful for what we do have. More importantly being thankful for those in our lives both near and far.

When was the last time you called your grandparents, that favorite great aunt or even a cousin you haven't seen in a while? Have you called your parents just to say I love you? What about that grandbaby in another state? What about your children?

My point is reach out and touch ALL of those that you love and cherish. Family is important and keeping linked to them even more so. I have a very large extended family that I had lost touch with. I know they are around, I know where most of them live, I just had not spoken to many of them in 20 years. Shame on me. Like Dr. Phil says, someone has to step up and be the hero in a broken relationship. Sometimes it just takes a small gesture to get the lines of communication open again.

So call or write that long lost family member today. You never know when the last time you talked to them will be the last time you talk to them.

Our regular Wednesday blogger, Quilts-by-Lee, is out of town for a family emergency so I’m filling in by doing her blog today. I hope this doesn’t confuse everyone having the Wednesday blog on Tuesday.

Today I want to talk about one of my favorite subjects – helping out homeless cats and dogs and other pets. Now, more than ever, homeless pets are having a really hard time of it. With the economy in trouble, not as many people are adopting pets as they did in previous years. In addition, so many people who are losing their homes to foreclosure are having to give up their pets, too. So the shelters are bulging at the seams with so many animals and getting less funding. Did you know that there are ways to help these animals without stirring from your computer or digging out the checkbook? Well, read on.

In 2008, Mimi Ausland, a young girl from Oregon, started out wanting to feed the animals at the local animal shelter. Then she saw a site where rice would be donated to hungry people by clicking on a link. So she asked her dad to set up a website for dogs and FreeKibble.com was born. In addition to providing free kibble to the Humane Society of Central Oregon, they’ve added 13 shelters from Oregon to Florida to their list and hope to expand to include many more. They have partnered with Castor and Pollux to provide these animals with a high quality, all natural kibble. And so the cats wouldn’t be left out they created FreeKibbleKat.com to provide food for cats in these shelters, too. To help out, all you have to go is go to http://www.freekibble.com/ and http://www.freekibblekat.com/ , answer a fun trivia question and 10 pieces of kibble will be donated. You don’t even have to get the right answer! According to the sites, nearly 120,000,000 pieces of dog kibble and over 85,000,000 of cat kibble have been donated so far. They have a different question on each site every day, so make it part of your morning computer routine to play BowWow and Meow Trivia. It’s fun, educational and helps a lot of homeless animals.

Another great site for effortless giving is The Animal Rescue Site at http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/clickToGive/. Funding for food and care is paid by site sponsors and distributed to animals in need at the Fund for Animals' renowned animal sanctuaries (including Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch in Texas and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in California), pet shelters supported by the Petfinder Foundation , North Shore Animal League , and other worthy animal care facilities supported by the GreaterGood.org foundation. In addition, Petfinder.com is a great place to start your search for your next pet. The site also has a store with all sorts of nifty things for animal lovers.

Make-A-Wish Teddy Bear Quilt Results

Hi, All!!

Lisa, our organizer for our latest group charity project, is busy with parties, weddings, and being a mom, so she asked for me to send out the results of the auction, and a huge hug from all who bid, donated squares, and supported her when she was putting them all together.

As many of you saw, Lisa did a fantastic job of creating 4 items: 2 twin size quilts, a baby quilt, and a "taggy/lovey" style blankie out of the donated squares. There are lots of pictures from previous posts, so please take a minute to see them. Lisa had a few challenges along the way, but handled it with her usual dedication and love. The squares were donated by members of our own Rag Queen Quilters RQQtm group on Ebay, as well as QCG, Quilter's Corner Group, another super group on Ebay.

The auctions ended last week. One lucky and very generous woman bid and won all 4 items, and also donated additional funds to both charities. Lisa described the winner as a dedicated customer and good friend. This woman is truly one of the special angels we find whenever a cause needs to be met. I wish I knew her name, but we should say a little word of thanks for angels like her. The twin blankets both earned $50 each, with 100% of that money going to both charities. The baby blanket made $43, and the taggy made $15.50. Our Angel said she wished all the quilts had gone for more money, so she donated an additional $300, which Lisa forwarded directly on to both the Lukemia Foundation and Make-A-Wish. I think our groups should give themselves pats on the back and hugs all around. There are so many special women in our groups, and also a huge hug and thanks to our Angel!! Wonderful things happen when hearts open!

Keep your eyes peeled for our next charity project. I am sure one will be starting soon! In the meantime, remember that just a little donation can make a huge difference in the world, and all the little things add up! Thanks, and have a great Sunday!

Taking care of your Baby!

Sewing Machine Maintenance
Did you know your machine is your biggest expense when it comes to your craft? Some may think it is your fabric stash (and if you are like most of the RQQ members, it is huge!!lol,) but maintaining your machine makes your craft more enjoyable. I have some hints to make your machine last longer, and be more productive. These come from my own experience, as well as noted machine repair experts.
1. Use quality thread. Older threads will break, fray, and cause extensive lint buildup. Avoid this by purchasing better brands. Some on the market include YLI, Superior, Guttermann, Mettler/Metrosene, Sulky and Madeira. Avoid using the “Bargain Bin” threads. If you have to rethread the machine because of thread breakage more than 3 times in a project, use the old one for hand sewing, and get something newer. Thread breaks down over time, so don’t use Grandma’s either!
Check out Superior Thread and YLI and others. Many have great websites chock full of information and ideas! Superior even has jokes!

2. Use a quality needle. Singer Machines usually require Singer needles, but Schmetz needles are the ones recommended by many experts for all other home machines. Use the size recommended for the fabric, and the style of needle, too. Needles have different purposes, and work best when matched. You should change your needle every 3 or 4 projects. It does get dull, and your project will look better. Quilting needles are great for quilting the layers. Denim size 14 also work well for this. Universal size 11 or 12 are great for piecing, but when sewing knits or stretch fabric, switch to that. If you know the needle you were using for one project is still good, and want to save it when you switch to another type of fabric, put a sliver of felt or fabric in the spot in the case when you remove the needle, so you remember what type it was and where it was from. Or you can get out your huge magnifying glass to read the little letters on the base, lol. If you start getting skipped stitches, it might be a sign that your needle needs to be replaced. Check for smoothness before you keep it. If it has a burr or is slightly bent, it can damage your machine or fabric, and break during use. Don’t try it. The needle is the part of the machine that gets the most wear!

3. Clean the lint out of your machine after every project or so. Some recommend every bobbin change, and I know that when I quilt, it needs to be cleaned much more often than when sewing clothes. Listen to your machine. It will tell you when it really needs it, but do it on a regular basis before then! Get in the habit!! It will make your machine much quieter, smoother, and run better, so the jams and fabric snags at the beginning will be avoided. A good quality lint brush is great for this. Don’t blow into your machine by mouth!! Your breath has too much moisture and could lead to rust! If you feel your brush won’t reach all the lint, get a can of Spray Air (office supply stores or wholesale clubs have good prices on this) and use it carefully. Follow the label. Usually it says don’t shake or tilt, since moisture can spray out instead of just air. KEEP THIS OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN! There have been issues with misuse. Here is one link that gives some good info on cleaning your machine. Check your book, too! Just do it! Often! Now would be good, or at least when you finish reading the blog!

4. Get out your machine book and reread how to clean and oil it. Most books give the specifics for your machine. Don’t be afraid to do this yourself. You can easily do it, and it will save you lots of money at the repair shop, and time without your trusty machine when you are in the middle of a project. Remember to get under or behind the bobbin case, and replace everything carefully. There are sharp edges, so watch your precious fingers. Add a drop of machine oil (make sure you buy the quality oil recommended for your machine) after you are done cleaning it, according to the book. Some people don’t recommend “Spray Air” for your machine, but my rep does. He also recommends using a vacuum attachment to get out the lint, and cutting your thread at the spool and pulling it through the needle instead of pulling it back through the machine when changing colors. This helps to avoid some lint in the tension area. Check with your favorite machine repair place for details on your machine. Most reps will gladly help you learn how to maintain your machine. The time invested is well worth it. Maintained machines have a better trade-in value when you want that new baby!

I had a chance to ask Denverdoni a few questions about herself and here is what she had to say:

At what age did you become interested in crafting?

I started sewing when I was pretty young, about 7 or 8 years old.
My mom taught me to sew and I tried my hand at making some clothes
When I was in Jr. High School. Looking back at the one's I remember
They were pretty awful, but I thought they were cool back then!

How long have you been doing your craft?

My mother in law got me interested in quilting when she started selling
her crafts about 30 years ago. I made some baby quilts and wall hangings
when my kids were little, and lots of clothes for the kids after my mother
in law bought me a serger.

I went back to school after my kids started school and actually hung up my
scissors for almost 20 years. When my granddaughter was born 3 1/2 years ago
I got out my machine to make a blanket and bassinet skirt for her. I got
interested in quilting again and kept hearing about rag quilts in the HGTV
Quilting group so I looked it up online and started teaching myself how to
make raggies.

What different crafts do you do ?

I love scrapbooking and card making, I don't spend much time on it anymore
because my sewing keeps me so busy. I also like primitive crafts, dolls
and ornaments made from old quilts and felt.

Who inspired you to get into it?

My mother in law was an award winning crafter. Her primitives and minitures
were amazing and her quilting was unbelievable.

Any goals in the next 5 years?

I would like to sell more of my finished items locally at craft fairs and in shops.
I am planning on doing a few craft shows this year to test that out. I also hope
to get better at online marketing so I can sell my quilt kits from a stand alone
online store, and maybe wholesale them to some small shops.

What is the best project you created and why?

I made a patchwork baby quilt from a lot of vintage flannel scraps I got from
my mom. They were floral prints that she had used to make pj's and baby gowns
for the grandkids 30 years ago. It turned out so cute and actually was the
inspiration for my best selling quilt kits.

What do you do when your not crafting?

I like to spend time with my family
especially the 3 grandkids who live close by. I love to cook and entertain. And
I spend waaaayy tooo much time on the computer, reading and writing blogs and
chatting with my quilting friends!

Anything else you want to share?

I am so chatty, I think I alread said it all!

Running a little late today with my blog.

Most of our regular readers know that a large majority of us make baby items. From start to finish they are a labor of love. Just like a child should be. But unfortunately that is not always the case. There are hundreds of thousands of children in foster care and at least that many in orphanages around the world. Some are there due to lack of parental concern and some are there for other reasons. No matter the reason, these children need love.

This weeks challenge is to find a child that is in foster care, an orphanage or one that just lost a parent. Reach out and show them some love. The greatest gift one can ever receive is unconditional love.

Instead of looking at ways to use scraps or repurpose items for quilting and other sewing projects, I thought it would be interesting to talk about recycling unusual items. We all know about recycling paper, aluminum, glass and plastic, but what about other stuff we want or need to get rid of?

If you have a formal dress like that tangerine bridesmaid’s dress or that cocktail dress that’s too big/too small or that you will never wear again taking up space in your closet, there are a lot of local groups who collect them for girls who can’t afford to buy a prom dress. If there’s not one in your town, check out http://www.operationfairydust.org/ or http://www.catherinescloset.org/.

You can benefit the environment and a worthy cause at the same time by recycling gadgets like PDA’s, MP3 players thru groups like http://www.recycleforbreastcancer.org/. This organization will send you prepaid shipping labels, recycle your items and donate the proceeds to breast cancer charities. According to their site they will even take big items like TV’s and computers.

Don’t you wish you had a better way to dispose of holiday cards than putting them in the recycle bin? Well, St. Jude’s Ranch for Children (http://www.stjudesranch.org/) runs a holiday card reuse program in which the kids cut off the front covers, glue them onto new cards and sell the results. This earns them money and confidence. Isn’t that a good cause? And check out their site for more ways you can help out the kids.

And what about all those juice bags? Because they are a combo of plastic and aluminum, they aren’t recyclable. A company called TerraCycle offers 2 cents for each Honest Kids, Capri Sun and Kool-Aid Drink pouch and 1 cent for any other brand and will send it to the charity of your choice. TerraCycle turns the pouches into purses, totes and pencil cases that are sold at Target and Walgreens stores. They also pay for candy and cookie wrappers and lots of other items. The even provide shipping bags/boxes to send the items to them. Do check out their website to see all the products they make from recycled things. Really cool! Go to www.terracycle.net/brigades.

Metal eyeglass frames can be recycled with other scrap metal, but plastic ones cannot. A better use is to donate them to http://www.neweyesfortheneedy.com/. They will also take sunglasses and plastic frames in good condition. You can drop off old pairs of glasses at LensCrafters, Target Optical or other participating stores and doctor’s offices, too. They will send them to http://www.givethegiftofsight.org/. They have a store locator on their site so you can find a place close to you to drop off the used eyewear. I know I have several pair that I need to take in.

So it seems that even if something isn’t “recyclable” there’s someone out there who can recycle or repurpose whatever it is and keep it out of the landfill. Many organizations do this and benefit people in need at the same time. Now isn’t that just the best thing you’ve ever heard?

Mondays are usually color days. I think it would be most appropriate to select our colors Red, White, and Blue to honor our brave military men and women who have given their lives for our country.

Since the year 1868, May 30th has been the actual day of Remembrance, but we celebrate it on the last Monday of May each year. Over the years, since the beginning of the holiday, many widows, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and children have decorated their soldiers grave with flowers, American flags, and wreaths to show honor to our war heroes. We certainly will not forget those who gave their lives to fight for our freedom.

Hello everyone, Linda is our featured seller and her eBay Id is troutt_enterprizes, but she doesn't sell fish...lol no she sells lots and lots of wonderful fabric.

She has been with Rag Queen Quilters for a long long time, so she is a native for sure...She even had a get together,and got to meet some of the other members at a local quilt show. That was really neat. I didn't get to go but they took lots of photos.

Linda is always around the group, very active, and most of us know her personality, she is very funny when she wants to be. At least that's what the Peeps say!! LOL inside joke sorry.

Linda has fabric listed on ebay in squares and yardage, and usually a nice variety too. Here are some of her current listings.

This is just a very small portion of what she has listed, there is several hundred listings, and I have bought from Linda before so I know she is a fast reliable shipper.

Just take a moment and browse through her listings, I asked Linda some questions and here is what she said.....

At what age did you become interested in crafting?

When I was five or six I would get pieces of fabric and try to make doll clothes. All I could do was cut too holes for the arms, but my dolls had alot of dresses and I thought they were beautiful. At eleven I learned to embroidery in GA group at church.

How long have you been doing your craft?

53 years, what a personal question, since I was eleven and learned to embroidery. In my early 20s I made my dtr a quilt and matching curtians for her room. I used one piece of fabric and quilted it on the sewing machine, 2" squares but in places they would be 6" or maybe wider, that was some crooked lines. Never made another quilt until I made one for her little girl a sunbonnet sue. I have sewn clothing since I started high school in 1958 and learned to sew.

What different crafts do you do ?

Sewing clothing, sewing items for my house mostly curtians and pillows. Piecing quilts on the sewing machine and hand quilting them. Embroidery quilt blocks, make raggy quilts, I made a raggy quilt for my great nieces baby. Learned how to make raggy quilts from the girls in the RQQ group. You couldn't ask for better teachers anywhere.

Who inspired you to get into it?

My grandma she made my clothes when I was a little girl, and she was always piecing quilts, and then hand quilting. After she retired to make ends meet she quilted and charged $20 a quilt. My other grandma also pieced quilts. My mom never could sew but I remember her patching clothes and sewing on buttons. She pieced quilts, I have the last quilt she made Grandmothers Flower Garden.

Any goals in the next 5 years?

I hope I am alive and well, and still selling fabric. I plan to work on my UFO quilts and projects list that is a mile long. If I would get something done and stop adding projects I could see the end.

What is the best project you created and why?

I have two, my dtrs wedding and a special quilt. I made my dtrs wedding gown with a long train, 3 briadmaids dresses, 2 little flower girls dresses, and mine. The wedding was in black and white.

I designed and made a quilt for my youngest granddtr it was a farm scene I appliqued across the top I AM A COUNTRY GIRL, I added a large red barn, a big apple tree and all the farm animals. She took her quilt to school for a quilt show and it got 1st place.

What do you do when your not crafting?

Work in my flowers,go shopping, spend time on computer, read, watch tv, my favorite show is Nancy Grace. Play with my grandkids.

Anything else you want to share?

At one time I had a sewing business, at that time I had rather sew than eat. I always dreamed of having my own line of fabric that my customers could choose from. In 2003 I was able to open my ebay fabric store and bundle by bundle I filled my 12X12' room. My room is now filled with fabrics, My dream has come true. I work and strive every day to make every transaction a wonderful experence.

If you have visited us you know that our group is very generous. Most of us contribute to special charity quilts like the ones going now to benefit and honor one of our members daughter. Today I want to share with you another wonderful charity based blog.

Jan over at http://sewmanyquiltstoolittletime.blogspot.com/ heads up a program to deliver quilts to those affected by some horrific wild fires in Australia. She has some very heart warming stories about delivering quilts to people who have been left with nothing. I have been following her blog for several months now and shame on me, I have not sent anything to help out. Today that will change.

My challenge to you, send a block or two. It may not seem like much but if we all do this I would imagine that a quilt or two could be created. I know it is an International address for those of us in the USA but if you put them in a small manila envelope with four stamps for one block and five stamps for two it will make it there without any problems.

We here in the good old USA sometimes forget that there are people hurting and in need in other places around the world. So jump quilting sisters and spread some love across the globe.

SAVE YOUR SELVAGE!

I thought I had seen it all, but now I’ve found the ultimate in recycling for quilters. One site even calls out to the “Raiders of the Wastebasket”. This latest rage is selvage quilts. Your heard me right – selvage quilts. Kinda like strip quilts, but using the selvage edge of the fabrics that we all have tossed – until now! That little strip of fabric that we’ve always been told to cut off and throw away is now the basis of a new style of quilting.

Often the selvage edge contains all sorts of information about the fabric. The best, I think, are those little squares that show all the colors used in the fabric. You also usually have the maker of the fabric, the collection and, sometimes, the year of the collection.

Selvage Quilts.com has a great tutorial on making these quilts. I love all the variations in layout. Just go to http://www.selvagequilts.com/how-to-make-page/howtomakeaselvagequilt.html. The owner, Karen Griska, also has a book and a blog dedicated to selvage quilting. You can find her blog at http://www.selvageblog.blogspot.com. She has posted lots of examples of selvage quilts from some of her followers on the blog.

Welcome to RQQ, today we feature a member who has been with us for a long time, Lee.
She has been through it all, and she is always generous with helping for any charity work we do, ALWAYS THERE. She is a very active member, I think she is on the group at least once every day. She has much talent too, go check out what she has to offer. I asked Lee a couple questions and here is what she said...

At what age did you become interested in crafting?

My Mamal tried to teach me to crochet when I was about 10, never did get very good since I couldn't keep the gauge consist ant. Then I learned to sew in home-ec in 7th grade. Plus I watched my Mamal quilt since I was knee high.

How long have you been doing your craft?

I have been quilting since 1992 and rag quilting for over 2 years now.

What different crafts do you do ?

Besides the rag quilts and occasional traditional quilt I really like making rag totes, table runners and other home decor items. I also like working with beads and I make what I call kitchen chimes from metal kitchen utensils.

Who inspired you to get into it?

My Mamal inspires my quilting. She passed away in 1986 and I had several quilt tops she had done. I decided to quilt one of them in 1992 and got inspired to create my own.

Any goals in the next 5 years?

Hopefully the online sites will have really taken off by then and I can afford to hire someone to do some of the cutting and clipping for me.

What is the best project you created and why?

I am very proud of the first full sized quilt that I made about 5 years ago, it was my wedding present to my husband and I actually finished it by our wedding. Before that the largest quilt I had made was a twin size. I am also very proud of my Dallas Cowboy's items.

What do you do when your not crafting?

I am a NASCAR FANatic and have been since I was a little girl so most weekends are spent watching the Truck race, Nationwide and all the prerace shows leading up to and including the Cup race. Of course I am usually in front of the sewing machine or clipping while watching. We also like to go to the local dirt tracks. An occasional trip to the Casinos is always very relaxing for me.

Anything else you want to share?

I am Mom to three wonderful children and I am Nana to seven wonderful grand babies. It is truly amazing to see their parents in them and remember when they were that age. I am thankful that I found RQQ or more accurately they found me. THe friendships formed here help get me thru the days. Just knowing that someone is there just a few clicks away is comforting. It does not matter if it is a quilting emergency or a health or family one, someone will be there to console you, raise your spirits or just be silly with. Thank you quilting sisters for being there.

Today I want to talk about a way that we as quilters can help our local communities through quilting and sewing. One of the ways to do this is through a really neat organization called Project Linus.

Project Linus provides sick children with blankets and quilts. At a time when they are scared and away from home simply getting their own special blanket or quilt brings them a sense of comfort. I first came into contact with the organization several years ago but for some reason had forgot about them Then back in February when my youngest granddaughter was sick and admitted to the hospital a nurse brought her her own special quilt. I asked the nurse if that was through Project Linus and she only knew they had a stack of them that are brought in. I did some research and found that they were indeed from Project Linus. I quickly forgot again until I saw a story on the news about the project and this time wrote myself a big note so that I would not forget again.

How you can help.

go to the chapter listings at the top of the page. Then click on your state and it will take you to dozens of local chapters. Contact the one nearest you to find out what they need and where you can drop them off. Some will even pick them up.

My challenge to all of you. Make at least one quilt or blanket to donate to Project Linus. Come in here and share your experience with us. I want to keep a count of how many were donated.

"GO GREEN" TUESDAY

For years I’ve heard of people making quilts from t-shirts. That was before I was into quilting and I didn’t understand how that would work. I do think it’s a great way of recycling all those shirts that have been acquired along the way. I wish I had known how to do this back when I had several dresser drawers full of t-shirts. I used to buy one every place we went, every concert attended, every festival enjoyed. You know what I mean.

Making a t-shirt quilt requires a bit more work than a regular woven cloth quilt. The portion of the t-shirt that is to become part of the quilt must be fused to interfacing to keep it from stretching. After that, it’s up to you. Some of these quilts are made from equal sized squares; some have the size and shape of the squares unique to each shirt depending on the design. This is something that you can really personalize.

Now you have a better way to recycle those old t-shirts than to make dust rags from them. In fact, you can still use the back of the shirt for dusting and cleaning. But you will be able to preserve those memories of travel, athletic events, schools, concerts and other special occasions. If you need inspiration, check out the links below or get one of the books available on the subject. And, if you don’t want to or can’t make the quilt yourself, there are lots of quilters out there who will be glad to make it for you.

Make-A-Wish Charity Teddy Bear Rag Quilt

Hello and a very Happy Mother's Day to all of you reading this as well as your loved ones. I hope today is very relaxing for you.
I wanted to review so far the charity quilts' that are almost complete. I came up with the idea to create a charity quilt for an RQQ sister of ours whose 7 year old daughter was diagnosed with a form of treatable cancer last year. She is on her final phase of her aggressive treatments and still manages to keep a smile on her precious little face. When I spoke with her mother and asked what charity has helped her family she told me Make-A-Wish Foundation and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society were 2 of many. These are the 2 I chose as Make-A-Wish is granting her daughter the wish to go to Disney World late this summer and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has helped out throughout her care and treatments also.
I chose the teddy bear theme as all people young and old, boy and girl like teddy bears. I opened the option up for the RQQ sisters' and my other lovely group of quilting sisters' in QCG, to donate squares if they would like. The turn out was wonderful. I received enough squares, fabric, and appliques to create a small ribbon tag rag quilt blankie, a cuddle sized rag quilt blankie and 2 larger rag quilts' closer to the size of a twin. I will be able to get exact measurements as soon as those 2 are complete. If you flip back through all the posts of the Teddy Bear Rag Quilt you will see picture by picture the progress this charity project has taken.
I have decided to start the auctions for all 4 of these quilts' on May 17th, which is the day that the QCG sisters' are starting their monthly Red Tag Sale on Ebay. 1 small quilt and 1 larger quilt with all proceeds going to Make-A-Wish Foundation, and 1 small quilt and 1 larger quilt with all proceeds going to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. We have high hopes that these auctions will do wonderful for these 2 fine charities! Please do keep posted and be sure to mark your calendar for May 17th being the start of these auctions. This is a special dedication for Mothers who are no longer here with us but not forgotten. My mom passed in February two years ago, and my Grandma passed before I was born. So here is yours and a couple more RQQ Ladies Moms who are no longer with us ....

My Mom was the most loving, caring, generous, and devoted Mom ever and not a day goes by that I don't have wonderful thoughts of her.

Cherrie is a wonderful friend, she has been a friend of mine for a couple years..been with our group for a long time too. I met Cherrie by her purchasing one of my embroidered quilt blocks, and she became very busy over time doing custom rag quilts for people, and ended up buying her own embroidery machine.

She does some beautiful work, but she is a little hoggish with chenille, she likes the old vintage chenille, and sells kits with them all cut up for you in them. Check her out by searching RQQ again, look for Chenille, with some awesome embroidered blocks in the kits as well.

At what age did you become interested in crafting?

I've always been interested in crafting. I learned to crochet when I was about 8 and then I learned cross stitch when I was around 10. I fell in love with Rag quilting when I was 42 and found out I was going to be a grandmother.

How long have you been doing your craft?

I have been doing Rag quilting for about 3 years now.

What different crafts do you do ?

I mostly do Rag Quilting and pillows now but I used to do tons of crochet and cross stitch projects and I did quite a bit of scrapbooking too.

Who inspired you to get into it?

Well, My grandmother taught me to crochet and to cross stitch. To this day, every time I do cross stitch I can still smell her (spirits of ammonia) mixed with the Kerosene lamp in her house. I would have to say that my grand daughter Abby inspired me to do rag quilting! I was looking on EBay one day and saw one or sale and thought..."I could make that"...So I looked up some instructions on line and that's how it all started!

Any goals in the next 5 years?

Because of my health I generally don't plan 5 years ahead but there are things I would like to accomplish. I would like to be more involved in the group. I love the charity quilts we make and haven't been able to participate in the last couple we have done so hopefully the next one. I would like to be able to sell more.. Maybe even have my own website or a site with a couple of friends?

What is the best project you created and why?

I think my favorite project is still my granddaughter's 1st rag quilt that I made her. I put in parts of clothes that were worn by her mommy when she was a baby. And pieces of clothing from her other grand mother and I as well as a block made from an embroidered pillowcase that my mom (Abby's Great grandmother did when she was younger).

What do you do when your not crafting?

Hmmmm. Well, I love my family and I love being part of the RQQ Group. There seems to be a special bond between the members and Everyone is always willing to help the others out. If your feeling down there is usually someone with a funny story to cheer you up! I have learned so much from different people in the group. I remember one time I asked one of the girls in the group (she will know if she reads this) about how she did her handles on her purses. They looked so good I just had to ask! Anyways, She freely told me her technique and that has helped me so much. And just recently I was looking for some green cupcake fabric. One of the ladies was trying to order it for me and another lady posted a few day s later that she has the fabric and could spare a yard. There have been tons of other things as well. It seems like everyone in the group wants to help the others in the group succeed. I Love them All!

You know Mothers Day is just around the corner, my Mom passed away not too long ago, and she loved Johnny Mathis, thus the music you hear today, but there are other Moms in our lives that we can celebrate...my daughter will be a new mommy soon, I am a Mom of four girls, and of course there are Aunts and cousins that are Moms, yesterday was hug a child day, and I say hug a Mom today, or Mom like person. My Mom liked humming birds as well, so I added humming bird photos to my daily photo section!! Don't forget to tell that special someone ( a Mom),how wonderful they are...even if their not Your Mom

Today I am declaring it "Hug a child day".

Give every child you come in contact with today a hug. If it is not your own child or grandchild ask for permission to give the child a hug. You will be amazed at the response you will get. And you never know, that child may not have been hugged at all today.

I had my four year old granddaughter yesterday and she is a hugger. She kept climbing in my lap and giving me hugs and kisses. It did wonders for me. It made me think, if a four year olds hugs can make me feel that good how good did it make her feel to be hugged. She is by no means neglected or has no one to hug her. She even hugs her big sister and brother and they hug her back.

How many children went without a hug yesterday? How many will go without one today? Sometimes it is just an over site, sometimes there is just no one to give them a hug. To many children are left out, abused or ignored. Parents get overwhelmed with work, finances and personal problems. They may not forget to hug them on purpose. Then there are the children in abusive homes that need the hugs even more.

So today take the time to hug a child. And be sure to come back here to share your stories.

Did you know that each year Americans throw away some 100 billion polyethelyne plastic bags? Only 0.6 percent are recycled. (Source: Worldwatch Institute) Sad, isn’t it?

Well, today I want to tell you about a story I heard on our local NBC news affiliate, KPRC Channel 2, last Friday evening. It was about a Rice University professor named Diana Welch. Prof. Welch had collected plastic shopping, grocery and newspaper bags for years, determined that she would find a good way to recycle them. It was the purchase of one of those little looms that make potholders from woven loops that showed her the way. I guess it was one of those “light bulb” moments we all hear about. After making the usual woven potholders, Diana decided to try making things with the plastic bags.

First she made potholders and trivets and placemats and even small tote bags from her collected plastic. Then she created (and has a patent pending for) a larger lap loom that she used to weave the plastic bags into 14” x 17” panels. She knew there should be a market out there for someone to make these panels into better purses and so she searched country wide. She also started hiring local women to weave her panels, thereby helping the local economy.

Prof. Welch finally found a local upscale purse designer, Elaine Turner, who said that the panels fit right into her design style. Now she has added the “Molly” bag to her line of handbags. Elaine added hemp handles and a natural organic lining to the plastic woven panels to make the "Molly" totes. I have to say that these purses are just beautiful. Expensive for my budget, but beautiful. The colors are different depending on which bags are used. They are fashionable, sturdy, easy to clean and, of course, very green. Make-A-Wish Charity Teddy Bear Rag Quilt

Hello all! Hope you are all having a wonderful Sunday! This will probably be my final blog of the "in progress" of this particular charity project the RQQ and QCG groups have contributed to. I have added the appliques received, all squares are "X'ed" and these last 2 rag quilts are ready to be constructed. I have pictures of the one that I have layed-out. I have a total of 60-9 1/2" squares for each quilt! Absolutely amazing, isn't it???

The second quilt is made up of an equal amount of squares as well. Of course I split all the different prints up evenly between the 2. They will both either have neutral colors on the back or prints to match the fronts. So the back of these 2 quilts will be a random and fun layout!

I have had a lot of fun working on this project and the cause it is for makes it all the more rewarding. One of each quilt quilt large and small will have all proceeds going towards The Make-A-Wish Foundation. The other larger and small quilt will have all their proceeds going towards the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Once again, these were all created in honor of an RQQ sister's precious 7 year old daughter whom was diagnosed with cancer last year and has been a little trooper through all of her treatments.

Saturday, Featured member of the Day is Theresa!!

Theresa is the co-owner of Rag Queen Quilters, she is like the other half of my brain, sometimes the whole thing.LOL She has been with this group since the beginning, has seen everything, and helped get RQQ where it is today. She can certainly sew up a storm too, you should see all the goodies that has come out her front door. She is part of the mod squad, ( we have a wonderful mod squad), she is part of the glue that holds this group together too. We all love Theresa, except the lady at the flower shop, but that is too long to tell the story...he he it will make her smile when she reads this....he he he.

Theresa makes rag quilts, totes, and these fancy little raggy pin cushions. They are so cute, you must check them out...here is a photo of one she did.

It is done in such bright colors, she has lots of instructions available to make tote bags, and her pin cushion as well.Here is some more of her work. This is the tote bag pattern.

I asked Theresa some questions and here is what she said.

At what age did you become interested in crafting?

Probably at about 12 or 13. Both of my grandmothers taught be crafting. One did crochet and the other quilted.

How long have you been doing your craft?

I have been quilting for over 20 years and rag quilting for over 2 years now.

What different crafts do you do ?

I like to paint, design mosaics, ceramics, and make primitive crafts of all sorts.

Who inspired you to get into it?

Grandma Walters inspired me with her quilting. She passed away in 2004 after spending the last 7 years of her life in the nursing home. She and I had created over 20 traditional quilts together.
Our last outing together we went up to Shipshewana, IN (Amish area) and spent the day looking at quilts and crafts of all sorts. It was a wonderful day.

Any goals in the next 5 years?

I don't know, I plan on doing more contributing to the charity projects we do in RQQ and at my church. I think helping others makes me more happy than anything. I would like to get my sewing room completed way before 5 years is over too!
It is a huge remodel job we are doing ourselves.

What is the best project you created and why?

Grandma and I made a lone star quilt together. I made the top, she quilted it. A few months after it was completed my Grandmother was featured in a local newspaper about her quilting. Grandma wanted me there too for the interviewing. And so both of us were pictured with the Lone Star Quilt for the publication. That was way back in 1990 maybe. I was about 20.

What do you do when your not crafting?

I am an athletic trainer and a teacher for high school students. I love watching baseball and sitting in the dugouts with the guys. For 3 summers (2003-05) I was the athletic trainer for an independant baseball team. It was fun but hard work. We played 96 games in 102 days during the summer so most of my time was spent on a charter bus with 26 obnoxious guys. A lot of them are still good friends of mine.

Anything else you want to share?

Well, since you asked..... I really enjoy being a part of the Rag Queen Quilters sisterhood. There is a true friendship among this group of ladies. It is so amazing to see the charity projects come together from time to time.
RQQ is also bound together by our closeness. We have shared so many personal trials with others in the group, and I have prayed and been prayed for. When you read that someone is praying for you there is such a feeling of comfort.
I joined RQQ about 3 months after it was created. I learned so much from the original gals there. We have seen many join and leave over the last 2 years. But the ones that remain are my closest friends. I care deeply for our group of ladies. That is the reason behind preserving our integrity as a high class group of ladies. My grandmother died of a stroke 7 years after it happened. It took another 7 years to find my way back to quilting. I joined RQQ about that time. The RQQ girls are all so much a part of me and I mean as close as what my grandmother was/is. RQQ is a comfort to me.
The truth about RQQ is this: We are a FAMILY AND A ROCK.

What about Wednesday?

When I first heard “What about Wednesday” my mind automatically went to Wednesday’s child. So I have decided that most of my Wednesday blogs will be about our most precious resource. Our children.

Most of our members at RQQ have children and many of us have grandchildren. As good parents we do everything we can to protect our children but there are some things we just can’t protect them against. One of those being Autism.

April is Autism Awareness month so I wanted to make you aware of this disease, if you were not already aware. The odds of being diagnosed with Autism is 1 in 150. It is a complex disorder that typically lasts throughout a person’s lifetime. It occurs in all racial, ethnic, and social groups and is four times more likely to strike boys than girls. It impairs a person's ability to communicate and relate to others. It is also associated with rigid routines and repetitive behaviors. It can be diagnosed as early as 6 months now but is more commonly found around age 3.

I have been blessed that none of my three children or seven grandchildren have this disease. I have however met several of these special children. I have been blessed to get to know some of their parents and siblings. Life is not easy for these families. I am so in awe of the strength of character it takes for these parents to carry on and stand strong. They have tried many of the newest treatments, some of which are controversial. I can only say that I would have to be in their shoes to know what I would do.

I am also proud that my favorite NASCAR driver, Elliott Sadler, is a huge supporter of Autism Awareness. His family has been touched by Autism. Another driver that is a strong supporter is Jamie McMurray. In fact Autism Speaks is one of the family of NASCAR charities. Autism Speaks is one of the main charities that I often contribute part of the proceeds of my Dallas Cowboy items to thru Mission Fish on eBay.

Please take the time to learn more about Autism so that when you encounter one of these special children you can approach them with love and some understanding.

Today I want to point out some great websites for Green Crafting ideas. I just found this site for “Crafting a Green World” http://craftingagreenworld.com/ . This site features DIY projects that incorporate reused, recycled and natural materials. You will find knitting, sewing, crocheting and other project ideas for eco-friendly and fashionable clothes, crafts, gifts and more. On the site I saw a great project for a linen canister cozy and one for recycling grocery bags into eco packaging. They even have some neat contests.

My Recycled Bags.com http://www.myrecycledbags.com/ has lots of ideas on recycling all sorts of materials into handbags, shopping bags, rugs, doll clothes and other creations. That should get the creative juices going!

If you have kids, you will want to check out About.com:Family Crafts. This page, http://familycrafts.about.com/od/craftsbyproduct/a/trashcrafts.htm, has lots of cool ideas on recycling trash into fun crafts. With summer vacation coming up soon it’s not too early to plan some new activities.

Teddy Bear Make-A-Wish Charity rag quilts

Hello everyone! Sorry for the delay in posting today. I want to share with you the pictures of the 2 finished quilts I have completed for our Make-A-Wish and Leukemia & Lymphoma Society charities. One is the cuddle sized teddy bear rag quilt and the other is the tag teddy bear rag quilt blankie.

I have received all the 9 1/2" squares from all the RQQ and QCg sisters, to complete the 2 larger quilts. I am excited to start working on these this week! I will keep you posted on that next Sunday. I absolutely LOVE this gal. She is extremely helpful and ready to give her advise on many topics of sewing, quilting, and rag quilting. She is Jack's Daughter as she says.....

At what age did you become interested in crafting? I started sewing doll clothes when I got my first machine, a Singer Children's machine, when I was six. I probably had fabric scraps and things (mom sews) and sewed by hand before that, creating silly skirts for my dolls. I learned to crochet, knit, and embroider shortly after that.

How long have you been doing your craft? I have been making dresses and clothes since I started. I think I have made just about any garment you can think of, and had a bridal business for a while. I did slipcovers (yuck, too many details) and window treatments (fun and easy) quilts (took a few "Quilt in a Day" classes about 18 years ago), and did alterations, too. Now I make costumes for school plays, quilt and do raggies for fun, and hopefully for some money. I also make most of my Christmas gifts for my family.

What different crafts do you do ? Ha, you should ask what I don't do. I am really trying not to make cards or scrapbooks, since I have such a stash in fabric and yarn, I have no room! I make floral wreaths, and took a jewelry class, so have made beaded and copper bracelets, earrings, and necklaces, too. I even refinish furniture! I joke that my dad is a "Jack of All Trades", and I am Jack's daughter!

Who inspired you to get into it? My mom and grandmothers were rather crafty, and my best friend's mom. Another neighbor did quite a bit to influence me, too. Most of the rest came from a desire to make something nice without spending lots of money.

Any goals in the next 5 years? I would love to be able to help others learn these wonderful crafts. I think that almost anyone can learn to sew and crochet. It is fun, relaxing, helps your brain, and is productive. I also want to try other quilting patterns.

What is the best project you created and why? I have so many projects I am proud of. I made some great wedding dresses. I finally finished a quilt I started about 3 years ago, and entered it in the RQQtm Fall Competition, and the group voted it Grand Champion. I have also gotten some great praise for the play costumes. I am just happy that people see my work and like it. I think I like seeing others create things with my help more, though. Last year for the play, we needed shawls and wraps. I showed a small group how to crochet, and after the play finished, the group donated 16 shawls to a local hospice. It was great knowing that by sharing my skill, others found comfort.

What do you do when your not crafting? I teach at a great, small business college. I also sing Karaoke, and bake.

Anything else you want to share? I think that many others can do what I do. I am honored to be considered for the member spotlight, but would be happier being a cheerleader and teacher for others to learn these wonderful crafts, too. RQQ™ is a wonderful group of women. It is a supportive, fun and creative group, and I am honored to be a member. I have made some great friends, and learned from each of them.

Hi. Our usual Tuesday blogger has computer issues this week, so I offered to step into her shoes to remind everyone that this week celebrates Arbor Day. We already decided Barbara's feet are much smaller than mine, but you get the idea! Lol.

Friday, April 24, is National Arbor Day.

Arbor day was started by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska in 1872. Morton was one who loved nature, and realized the importance of trees, from windbreaks, to help prevent soil erosion, as well as a source for paper and firewood. He felt there shoud be a day when people should replant trees. He had a contest that first year, with a prize going to the town that correctly planted the most trees that day. The celebration grew the next year, and included school students planting and maintaining trees. You can read more about this on the following website. There is a great history lesson in book format, which is where I got this information. Since then, Arbor day is celebrated by the states, usually on a day when it is the best planting time for the location. Southern states celebrate as early as January, while colder states may choose May. Most presidents have picked the last Friday in April. Where every you may be, it is always a good idea to plant a tree. The site has many ways to celebrate and plant trees. Look, too, at your local home stores. They usually give free seedlings this week. Power companies can be a source for seedlings, too. Have fun, and enjoy your new tree! Help us go green by planting green! This site has many great suggestions, including activities for children.

Morton said "Each generation takes the Earth as trustees." I think that is something that has been forgotten for too long, which is why we need to remember now, and plant a tree.

Most quilters are fiber artists that use other techniques, too. Many of the RQQ™ members also crochet, knit, do other needle crafts, or create jewelry. I found out that my favorite yarn company has recycled cotton as a new fiber available. I want to crochet a scarf with this soft recycled yarn from tee shirt scraps. I also saw some great projects using fabric strips to crochet or knit.

Many are also using soft and silky Bamboo as yarn fibers. Other companies are using bamboo to make fabrics. Why bamboo? Bamboo is a renewable resource. It grows quickly, around 47 inches in a day, and up to 80 feet in less than two months. It has strong fibers that help make the fabric or yarn soft, yet durable. I have seen things made from the yarn, and they are stunning. I have seen manufactured items, as well. Bamboo is naturally "wicking" which means the wearer will stay dryer when the air temperature is high. Bamboo is now being used in many different types of fabrics, and has even been seen blended with cotton for quilt batting. Check out your favorite stores for sheets, towels, tee shirts, flooring, and decorative accessories made from this great renewable source!

Tedyy Bear Charity Rag Quilt Update

Hello! Hello! I am excited to give you all the update on the teddy bear charity quilt project that 2 wonderful groups' of quilters have all contributed too!

Again...all the projects created out of these teddy squares will have all proceeds donated to charities that have helped one of our RRQ sister's young daughter whom was diagnosed and is undergoing treatment for cancer. I am awaiting a few more of the 9 1/2" squares so I can start on those 2 quilts this week. Yes I said 2 quilts! I received so many from all these lovely women that I can make 2 bigger quilts for 2 different charities. However you will also see the creations I have already started from the 8 1/2" squares I received from members. I also added to these squares with my own and any extra loose squares I received from all the ladies. So in the end...we will have a total of 4 auctions with all proceeds going to charities! Yipppeeeee! That is sooo exciting to know we can help others in ways so simple as creating beautiful handmade items!

Here you will see the smaller cuddle rag quilt that just needs clipped and washed. This was made out of the 8 1/2" teddy squares. This one has a back of neutral colors.

This is little rag quilt is going to be a baby ribbon tag blankie. Just needs ribbons added, clipped and washed! Also, has a back made up of neutral colors.

At what age did you become interested in crafting? As a little girl in Girl Scouts.

How long have you been doing your craft? I have been quilting for about 6 years and rag quilting for 3.

What different crafts do you do ? I also knit. I used to be an avid knitter until I got hooked on rag quilts.

Who inspired you to get into it? My grandmother taught me to knit when I was in the fourth grade. She also spent a lot of time with crochet, various needle craft projects and sewing.

Any goals in the next 5 years? Keep doing what I am doing.

What is the best project you created and why? One of my first totally handsewn quilts was a Cathedral Window which I did for my granddaughter before she was born. It was really beautiful and meaningful.

What do you do when your not crafting? We raise quarter horses bred for cutting competition.

Anything else you want to share? Rag Queen Quilters is a great group of women, and the blog is wonderful. I hope everyone enjoys it and gains something from it.

Thursday's raggy pick of the day, rag quilt kits!

Have you ever wanted to try and make a rag quilt? Maybe you thought about a special tote bag to carry around with you? Well you can make one, and they are pretty easy to do.

It just so happens that there are tote bag kits, and rag quilt kits being offered by our members. All you have to do is search for RQQ rag kit, and you will find them.

Here are some of the photos of what is currently out there, and hey, if your looking for certain fabrics for your kit, I would ask that member is they have it, you never know, you may suprise yourself at just how crafty you really are.

That is a pretty pink quilt kit, and just look at all the soft pink flannel, this would be so yummy when its finished.

Here below is another kit, with alot of bright fabrics, just perfect for the summer trips to the beach, or the park! Make one and give it to your Mom for Mothers Day!!!

You will be suprised at just how easy these are to make, there are no edges to finish, and if you can sew a straight line, you can make a rag quilt. Just make sure you have good sharp clippers, because there is alot of clipping involved.

Just try it, you will be hooked, we dare you!!!!

What about a child today, tomorrow, forever?

Yesterday morning I got caught up on some reading...something I should have read last week. Time gets away from me when my creative side takes over. But time for abused children never stands still. It should not be put on the back burner. The time is NOW and a very URGENT NOW.

Our group of Rag Queen Quilters girls- I am so very proud of them! They are so giving and kind. Many members have responded to this situation for these 2 children who are now safe and sound.

My heart aches for those who are suffering these same situations. Why? Why are they victims? I do not understand. Only God knows.

Our group is not only helping out these children, but also helping a dear friend/member our group whose daughter has been treated for leukemia over the last year. Another Why?

My thoughts leave me here asking you, the reader: (Whatever day it is you are reading this) reach out and help a child in need today. We have the abilities to do GOOD things, so don't do what I did all week long and procrastinate. The time is NOW and EVERY DAY!!

I became interested in feedsack quilts recently and wondered just what the history was on this unique form of recycling. Well, I found a lot of information at a number of different websites which I will list later, if you want to do more research and look at some fantastic pictures. I also found out that feedsacks were used for more than just quilts

Feedsacks (grain sacks, flour sacks, sugar sacks) were, and in some cases still are, used for towels, dresses, curtains, diapers, toys and, yes, underwear! My favorite story about that goes as follows, “One young girl was walking out with her beau when she tripped and fell. Oh, how embarrassed she was when her betrothed noticed her underdrawers imprinted with ‘southern best’ !” Just too funny. This history of these valuable and collectible sacks may not be as funny, but it is interesting.

Farmers have used cloth bags for grain, seed and feed since cloth was available. Early on homespun linen was hand sewn into bags for the grain that was kept for use in the home and for the next year’s planting. These sacks were valuable personal property and often were stitched with the name or initials of the owner.

After the sewing machine was invented in the 19th century, feedsacks were easy to produce and began to be mass produced by the late 1800’s. As the economy became more industrialized, these sacks were used to ship and store grain, feed and flour products. When it became easier for the miller to prefill instead of reuse the sacks, the empty sacks found other uses in the home.

In the 1920’s an innovative manufacturer of cloth bags figured he could sell more sacks if they were decorated to be more desirable for the farmer’s wife. Thus the printed feedsack came into being. Paper labels were applied so that all the fabric could be used.

During the war years, feedsacks allowed women to create things that they could not otherwise afford to buy. This was recycling at it’s best with farmers’ wives fighting over the prettiest patterns. But by the end of the 1950’s,though, manufacturers began to use heavy paper and other material for feedsacks. Patterned ones found today are almost all remnants of the 35 years of production, carefully washed, folded and stored away for use by thrifty farmwives.

You can find feedsacks themselves for sale on eBay and Esty as well as items made from them. They have a big range of prices. I saw a lot of 45 smaller feedsacks on eBay recently selling for around $8. If you want to get really fancy, there are imported French feedsacks that go for well over $100 each. I’ve seen them lately in some decorating magazines made up into beautiful pillows. Trends – another example of recycling. This time it’s ideas. Sometimes fabric companies will reproduce these feedsack prints in yard goods. I have seen some 1930’s feedsack repro fabric from Windham Fabrics recently. Keep your eye out for them.

Make-A-Wish Teddy Bear Charity Rag Quilt update

Happy Easter/Passover to all our followers & readers! We all hope you are having a beautiful day today where ever you may be.

I wanted to give a brief blog update on our Make-A-Wish Teddy Bear Charity Rag Quilt we will be auctioning off soon, with all proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. I received a few more squares in the mail this week and have a few more on their way within the next few days. To date (not including my own squares yet) I have received 74-completed 9 1/2" squares; 5-single 9 1/2" squares; 24-completed 8 1/2" squares; 11-single 8 1/2" squares and 8 teddy diecuts of different colors. This is such a wonderful turnout that I think I will probably be able to do 2 quilts and a lap/cuddle quilt also. Which means come next week I will be posting for 2 separate charities as we will be making the second quilt with all proceeds going to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society which is the other charitable organization that has helped our special girl these quilts are in honor of.

Hello,

Welcome to our blog. Normally on Fridays we pick a member of our group and feature them, but this Friday is a little different.

We saw a beautiful dog on petfinder.com several weeks ago, he was a brindle Boxer/Bull Mastiff mix. This dog had beautiful light brown/golden eyes, and was great with other dog, cats, and kids. We thought to ourselves, PERFECT, and we began to try and contact the rescue group that had him. Well after several days had gone, by and no return emails and no phone calls, we had given up on this brindle dog named Butch.

Along comes this beautiful boxer on craigslist, he only had a few days and was going to be put down, so we contacted many people through a local rescue here in the Bay area called Rocket Dog Rescue. Several of the members were doing what they could to help us try to save this beautiful boxer named Dallas.

Dallas only had about a week, and he was 4 hours away, but both my boyfriend and I have always loved Boxers, and wanted to rescue this dog. The day before we were going to take the long drive to go get him, another rescue group had scooped him up and already had a family that wanted him.

We were sad about not getting Dallas, but happy at the same time that he had been rescued, and already had a family that wanted him. So it had a good ending.

With all that going on, we decided to again try to see about the first dog we liked named Butch (the brindle, boxer/bull mastiff mix). So again, after a few days, the rescue organization finally contacted us back, and we arranged to go meet with the foster mom , now mind you this dog was 3.5 hours away.

Together we jumped on the motorcycle and rode those 3.5 hours, and boy did my butt hurt!!!! We got to meet Butch at a local park, and stayed for about an hour and a half. We then rode the other 3.5 hours back home, and my butt was totally numb!!!

We talked about Butch and if we wanted to get him or not, this dog was good with other dogs, cats and kids, so it wasn't long before we both decided that we wanted to rescue Butch.

This is why I bring you this story today, we are headed out, ( in a car this time). WOOHOO! to go get our new dog, and we're very excited about it. Butch is about 1.5 - 2 years old, and has had a rough life so far, sad story, and not alot of love, but that all changes for him on this wonderful Friday April 10, 2009~~

We already have one rescued dog, named Deniro, yes we named him Deniro after Robert Deniro, because he has the black dot on the side of his face. Were not sure if Deniro is a German Shepherd, Malinois, and or Chow mix. He looks like a German Shepherd without the black saddle, and a full purple tongue.

Ok, here is the funny part, we are going to change Butch's name, and what better name to give him but Pacino!!! So we will have Deniro and Pacino, our two rescues!!!
It is now 3:30 am here, and I need to go to bed, in order to get up early for that almost 4 hour drive to get Pacino.

Ya know, we are going to go a bit off the rag quilting topic today: This is the second Wednesday this month, and there are 5 Wednesdays altogether. This is the one right before Easter Sunday.

So What About April???

The month of April can be so surprising: It is sunny and beautiful one day then the next day we might get some snow. Flowers start coming up and blooming. Trees start filling out with leaves and buds again. Then it is rainy and overcast and still cold. I would say April really cannot make up its mind!

The birds start singing, mating, and building homes; kids are out playing; sounds of folks out working in the yards keeping up with the new growth. Winter and the feeling of death is finally gone as we start to realize life starts over again. The colors are back!

Easter Egg hunts, planting trees for Arbor Day, and Daffodils.

It’s Go Green Tuesday again! Today I wanted to talk about a few websites/blogs that have some good ideas about being a green quilter or crafter.

You can get lots of great tips from the Forever Green Quilts website. Just go to http://www.forevergreenquilts.com/ . One tip from that site is about greening up your sewing space. No matter the size of your space you should consider making some simple changes to reduce your impact on the earth:
- switch to fluorescent lighting or LED lights when you are working at night- use natural light only during the day and position your machine in the room to optimize the natural light
- turn your iron off when you are not using it – you’ll use less energy and your room will stay cooler
- use recycled paper for any printing you do- put a ceiling fan in the room to lower your heat and AC bills
- think about the destination of everything you use – where did it come from and where will it end up

At the Craftstylish website you can find instructions on making a simple quilt using recycled sheets and a recycled blanket. For those of us who love vintage linens this would be a great project! Finally, for those of us who have hundreds of tiny fabric scraps hanging around that you just can’t stand to throw out I found a great project at Jennifer Perkins’ “Naughty Secretary” Blog. She uses 1” x 1” fabric squares and the “inside” of a roll of packing tape to make the cutest bracelets!! As a seller who uses miles of packing tape to mail items, I have lots of those cardboard things available. Make-A-Wish Teddy Bear Charity Rag Quilt

Happy Sunday everyone! Thanks for stopping by RQQ's blog! I want to post more pictures of the squares received from the members of RQQ and QCG groups. Again, this quilt is being created in honor of a brave little girl that has been undergoing treatment for her Cancer diagnosis. Her mother is one of our RQQ sisters whom of which has been very busy with taking care of her family, following her little girls treatments closely and working full time. I have received well over 60 squares for this teddy bear themed rag quilt and have not received one print in the same yet. The deadline is April 11th to have all the squares in so I may layout all the squares and start sewing. I am excited for this to occur. After completion we will be auctioning it off on Ebay with all proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Thank you for stopping by Rag Queen Quilters blog, we have come to week two of our spotlight a member day.

We have chosen Grandma*Barbara, now if you don't know Barbara, the best way to explain her is....She would be that favorite Aunt, or Grandma, that was always calm, positive, and assuring about everything. If you had just got in trouble with your Mom, you would run to Aunt Barbara and she would always say.....Well, you know you did wrong, but you just do your punishment, and it will be over soon. She would always comfort you and make you feel like everything was gonna be ok! That is our Barbara. I also wanted to mention that she has been with our group from the beginning, a long time adopted Aunt, or Grandma for sure.

I had a few questions that I asked her, and this is what she said:

At what age did you become interested in crafting?

I've been doing some sort of crafting since kindergarten. You know, macaroni art and such.

How long have you been doing your craft?

My current craft is rag quilting and I've been doing that for aroundt 2 years. I've also been making non-raggy totes for about a year.

What different crafts do you do ?
I've made a lot of different items using rag quilting such as quilts, totes, sachets, placemats and coasters. Besides rag quilting I like to make non-raggy tote bags and I'm planning on taking a try at cloth baskets. I dabble in knitting and crocheting. I've done beading, polymer clay and counted cross stitch.

Who inspired you to get into it?

I have a dear friend who does rag quilting and she got me into it.

Any goals in the next 5 years?

I plan on trying new crafts - learning different skills. I may take a try at doing some online graphic design like templates.

What is the best project you created and why?

Well, my favorite so far is my first raggy strip quilt. It's made from scraps of all the projects I've worked on in the past few years and brings back a lot of memories. It's colorful and warm and I just love it.

What do you do when your not crafting?

I have a houseful of rescue cats I serve as staff for plus I have a house and yard to take care of. I also blog and twitter which takes a lot of time. I'm an active member of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees local chapter.

Anything else you want to share?

I love being a member of Rag Queen Quilters. Being part of an online group like this has given me the incentive to keep challenging myself in my craft because of all the support I get from my online friends.

Today I picked a beautiful princess rag quilt made by one of our members. You can see the photo on the right hand column. Alot of work went into that quilt, as do all handmade items.

This paticular rag quilt is 100% cotton flannel quilt handmade in her smoke-free studio. It measures 50X63 and is the perfect size for a toddler bed, or to throw over a twin size, do you have a little princess in your life?

What About Rag Quilt Pricing???

I am starting this topic to start a dialog with our readers. (Please feel free to comment.)

Pricing of handmade items can be a very tricky task to accomplish. For the seller it means defending his or her original ideas, designs, and the actual work or labor put into the project. It also means building on the cost of the materials used in the project. How much really depends on the monetary value the seller or creator sets which usually depends on his or her experience, and overall craftsmanship.

Personally when pricing my work I take into consideration the amount of time it took to complete the project and multiply that times my labor cost/per hour. I value my experience so my labor costs are set comfortably above the minimum wage rate. Much of my fabrics I try to purchase when on sale or at a huge discount. I have an average cost per yard I use to establish material costs.

For buyers, pricing means affordability. Especially in the present economy. But aside from that do buyers really understand what handmade items true value is?

Go Green Tuesday

Welcome to Rag Queen Quilters’ Go Green Tuesday. Every Tuesday, hopefully, I will be talking about how we as crafters can contribute to the greening of America by recycling and reusing common items. Remember that quilting started out as the ultimate recycling project with women using bits of old clothes or other items to make quilts to keep their families warm.

Today I wanted to look at a particular item that many quilters recycle into useable “works of art” like rag quilts and totes. That item is denim jeans. Mostly crafters use the denim fabric, but out there are examples of inspired uses for the pockets, buttons and even the zippers. Some quilters use old jeans from the closet or buy them from thrift shops. Online you can find vendors selling old jeans and, most helpfully, already cut squares of recycled denim. Recycled denim creations are varied and suit most every taste.

Recently RQQ™ member prekteacher had a beautiful Blue Jean Denim and Red Bandana Rag Quilt listed on eBay. The auction is already over, but it’s a beautiful example of recycling or “upcycling” old denim jeans into a useful item.

Another RQQ™ member, Imyeaney, has created a great rag quilt tote bag pairing recycled denim with a great Harley Davidson fabric.

And for the ultimate in recycling, RQQ™ member quilts-by-lee has turned the entire bib top of a pair of overalls into a nifty tote bag. Another cute little tote is made with two jeans pockets. Talk about one of a kind items!

Today, most of us quilters get our fabrics from the local shops or online instead of reusing old dresses and such. Maybe we should start looking around our closets for the inspiration for our next quilt!

Charity Projects of 2009

Each Sunday here in RQQ is reserved for the progress of our charity projects.

I am excited to share with you our first Charity project of 2009. It is a special charity rag quilt as it is going to be made up of numerous squares donated by a combination of RQQ and QCG (Quilters Corner Group) quilting members. This quilt is a teddy bear themed rag quilt being created in honor of one of our RQQ sister's 7 year old daughter that is battling Leukemia. She has had a long and brave journey of treatments for close to a year and is almost to her maintenance program. This quilt has been chosen to help raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation because they are granting her wish later this year. It is a well deserved wish for a sweet girl that has had a long brave battle. Once it is finished it will be auctioned off with all proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Here are a few pictures of some of the squares I have received so far....

This is the whole group of them so far...there are actually more of each kind but had to stack some...they would take up my whole floor if I didn't.

Raq Queen Quilters "spotlight a member" day

TGIF everyone, thank you for stopping by the RQQ blog. We chose today to be our spotlight a member day.

Todays pick is JOEY STRANGE, she came into this group back over 2 years ago and was pregnant with her first child. We all went through a part of the pregnancy with her all the way up to when she went into labor. She called me and I announced to the group " ITS A GIRL" and well the rest is history. Joey has two little girls now, goes to school, cooks, cleans, and takes care of her two little ones, but does manage to get to her sewing machine to stitch out some beautiful creations.

I asked Joey some questions and here are her responses:

At what age did you become interested in crafting?

I started crafting at an early age. I was in Home Ec class in the 6th grade while stationed in Germany. My first craft was to cross stitch a teddy bear in an Army uniform. My dad was in the Army.
How long have you been doing your craft?
Well I no long do cross-stitch. Now I’m crazy about rag quilting or bags. First I started the traditional quilting in 2003 (a couple of months before I got married).

What different crafts do you do?
Mostly quilting now, but I’ve done cross-stitching, knitting, and Swedish weaving. I know that there is more but can’t think of them at this time.

Who inspired you to get into it?
Surprise, no one.

Any goals in the next 5 years?
To be a stay at home mommy.

What is the best project you created and why?
My best project I would have to say is my little boy’s quilt. Why? Because I never finish ANY quilts for the family and I did for my first child. But the quilt is now a memory quilt of him because he was a stillbirth at 37 weeks old and now is with the Lord.

What do you do when you’re not crafting?
Taking care the hubby, girls (almost 23 month old and almost 6 month old), and house.

Anything else you want to share?
That RQQ (Rag Queen Quilters) is a fun and loving group of ladies. Glad to be a member.

We are all proud of Joey and all she does!! Of course with a group of woman who are mostly older than her, she has lots of Aunts, and Grandma types to keep her out of trouble.

Wednesdays here in RQQ are going to be dedicated to Why Not's?

This week: Why not finish a UFO today? A UFO is an unfinished object. I have quite a few UFOs on my list to finish, one is a table runner I free-motioned quilted back before Christmas that I need to finish the binding on. I may start that tonight and try to get it off my list.

Over the weekend our latest Bingo game ended with Grandma*Barbara the big champ. Way to go!!
